Sea dreams

I really relished this theme and couldn’t wait to get started.  The request came from a friend for a 1st birthday cake for her lovely little boy.  She wanted a sea theme with colourful sealife and some sort of boat.  She sent no images, only words, which meant I could really let my creative juices flow in creating the design.

I started with the characters – deciding on a turtle, an octopus and my favourite – a fish.  I am strangely fond of this fish!

Next came the shells and sponges.  Luckily I happened to have some shell moulds in my kit and was thrilled with how they came out – an array of vibrant colours, finished off with an variety of edible powder and sparkles.

Then the seaweed.  The key here was just  the right amount of tylose powder to make the sugarpaste pliable yet drying hard, and time!  I allowed a good 48hours of drying time to ensure they held their shape, then attached them all using edible glue.

Finally, the boat.  To be honest I wasn’t quite sure how to tackle this.  I wanted something that fitted with the theme but was not tacky.  The result was a traditional wooden rowing boat with seat inside.

The finished product is a fun, vibrant, character full cake with interest wherever you look.  One of the most enjoyable cakes to make to date.  The feedback was “an extraordinary beautiful birthday cake which we’ll always remember” – what more can I ask for??  Happy cake baker, happy customer.
